ASSI sponsors CACP Police Awards for Traffic Safety
CACP National Police Award for Traffic Safety – The Ottawa Police Service was the recipient of this award, presented at the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference. The award recognizes excellence, dedication and initiative in the field of traffic safety by enforcement officers across Canada, identifying and commending active enforcement personnel for their work to improve safety and encourage others to implement new initiatives. The Ottawa Police Service was recognized for their “Leave the Phone Alone Campaign”, designed to combat the number of distracted driving collisions in the city. Between 2009 and 2013, there were over 6300 injuries and 18 fatalities in Ottawa directly linked to distract driving and the success of this campaign will improve these statistics. Police instituted a public campaign involving enforcement, education, partnerships and awareness. Education packages were developed for high schools, universities and colleges, targeting new and future drivers. This initiative is being shared with police agencies across Canada.
CACP Lifetime Achievement Award for Traffic Safety – The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually on behalf of officers who have dedicated a significant portion of their career to the pursuit of road safety. It recognizes outstanding contributions to traffic safety over a period of time. The 2016 recipient is Staff Sergeant Mike Hinsperger of the Waterloo Regional Police Service. Staff Sergeant Hinsperger is celebrating his 25th year of policing, joining the WRPS in 1991. He has served in Patrol, Detectives and Emergency Response Units. Throughout his career, he has exemplified excellence and dedication to road safety locally, provincially and beyond, and has trained more than 4,000 officers in motorcycle and commercial motor vehicle interdiction techniques and enforcement across North America. Staff Sergeant Hinsperger was also the recipient of the OACP Traffic Safety Award of Excellence presented at their annual meeting earlier this year.
